Neighborhood Clean up Day

The Neighborhood Association sponsors a park cleanup day every spring and fall. Penrose is lucky to have 3 parks, Penrose, Butler Holmes, and Towers Park. In addition to the parks, we also maintain the planted nubs on South 2nd Street. Lets do our part to keep them looking nice!

Penrose Community Summer Picnic

The community picnic is held in Butler Holmes Park at 101 South Barton Street. Past picnics have included our friends from Fire Station Number One on Glebe Road and our local Penrose band "Unit E" will be entertaining us this year.

Barton Street Block Party

One night every summer, the residents of Barton Street have the street blocked off between 2nd and 6th, bring out the grills , and invite everyone bring a dish to share (bring your own grill items and beverages). The street will be blocked to traffic to make it safe for the children to play. You don't need to live on Barton Street to attend - all of Penrose is welcome.

The market is held at the Pike Park, which is the small green area in front of Eckerd's Drug store at Columbia Pike and South Walter Reed Drive.

Playgroups

Penrose also has an informal Play group. This groups meets on Tuesday afternoons between 4:00 and 6:00 pm at Penrose Park (at the intersection of S. Wayne and S. 6th). Children of all ages with their parent or caregiver are welcome to come.

Annual Easter Egg Hunt

Conservation Plan

The Neighborhood Conservation (NC) Plan has now been approved by NCAC, and as of February 2004, the County Board. Penrose now has an updated vision of needed improvements to our neighborhood and is one major step closer to obtaining funding for improvements already in the funding process. Thanks to all who participated in the production of the plan and especially to the plan coordinator Janet Dorn.

Penrose T-Shirts

Penrose now has T-shirts with the new neighborhood logo. T-shirts come in adult sizes: medium, large and extra-large and in kids sizes : small and large. Each shirt costs $10 and allows the neighborhood association a very small profit which will go toward upcoming newsletter printing costs. Checks should be made payable to the Penrose Neighborhood Association.

Contact Janet Dorn or Mary Kwasniewski to get your own Penrose T!

Arlington County Police Unity Tour Team Fundraising

    Letter to Penrose

I would like to take a moment to inform you of an endeavor being undertaken by the men and women of the Arlington County Police Department. From May 9-12, 2006, a team of four officers will be participating in the Police Unity Tour a 300 mile bike ride from Florham, New Jersey, through Ground Zero in New York, and finishing in Washington, D.C. The tour’s purpose is to help raise funds for the Police Officer’s Memorial Fund which honors those officers that have given their lives in the line of duty and assists those left behind. In order to participate in the Unity Tour our team must raise $1,500 per person.

The purpose of this letter is to see if the citizens of the Penrose Neighdorhood Association would be willing to help us in our fundraising effort. Last year, when the team participated in the 2005 ride, our corporate and personal sponsors donated in excess of $11,000. With your help we could meet or even beat that goal this year

I would love to speak with you about this directly and possibly request an audience at your next association meeting to discuss our efforts and answer any questions you or your members might have. Thank you for your time regarding this matter and look forward to hearing from you soon. If you would like to contact me please feel free to email or call me at the police department. My voice mail telephone number is 703-228-3600 extension 9748.

    Sincerely,

    Marc Mazzella
