Dama

Dama Pastry & Cafe

Quite the surprise.  If you like Ethiopian food or you’re an adventurous diner do not be put off by the uninspiring, even bleak exterior.  Once in the door it’s a whole different world of café and pastry shop in one room, deli in another, and the restaurant itself.

Soccer on TV is a big draw in the cafe. Interior is utilitarian and functional, but capturing a bit the sleepy casual atmosphere of an African local eatery,  there are tables and  booths and even a few stools at a window bar, admittedly looking out onto the parking lot.  Parking btw is not an issue, at least was not at lunch time.  Cheery orchids decorate the tables…had to look twice to see if they were real.  Clientele mostly African, but plenty of Pentagon office lunchers and a general sprinkling of others.  People roam to and fro in a casual friendly fashion.  Service too is casual but efficient, friendly and helpful if you need help navigating the menu.

But on to the food.  Absolutely authentic, fresh and tasty.  On the ubiquitous injera all manner of tasty lamb, chicken, beef and vegetarian options with dipping sauces and a tangy/sweet crunchy salad.  Nothing is more ruinous than nasty salad, and this one is an excellent complement to rich sauces.

The bakery/café sells breakfast and pastries.  It was proudly pointed out that several pastries were vegan.  Will report back on the breakfast  experience after another visit.

No alcohol, but excellent coffee, tea and the usual sodas and waters.

One of those cases where you think why in 10 odd years have I never been in here before?
